About the Fire fighting equipment inspection checklist

A fire fighting equipment inspection checklist features a list of tasks to be completed to ensure that fire protection systems are operating correctly and safely. Tasks may include checking alarms, sprinkler systems, and other components of the system. Regular maintenance ensures that the system is ready to respond in the event of a fire.

Improve safety and reliability with a fire fighting equipment inspection checklist

A fire fighting system maintenance checklist is a document used to ensure that fire suppression systems are working properly.

The checklist includes a visual inspection of the system, including checking for proper labeling, ensuring all components are securely attached, and that all components are in good working order. It also includes testing of the system, such as checking the pressure levels, testing the water flow, and ensuring the system is properly balanced. Aside from the visual inspection and testing, the checklist includes an assessment of the system’s maintenance records and fire safety plan.

Finally, it’s important to review the firefighting system maintenance checklist regularly to see if the system is functioning properly. This will help to ensure that the system is ready to handle any potential fire emergency and that it is in optimal condition to protect lives.

How to use the fire fighting equipment inspection checklist

Here’s how you can use it effectively:

  1. Start with the right preparation. Open the editable checklist in your app or software. Gather the necessary tools for inspection and any previous records for reference. Make sure you know the location of all equipment and areas to be assessed.
  2. Log the inspection details thoroughly. For each piece of equipment, fill in the fields: inspected, good, condemned, or refilled/recharged. Pay special attention to equipment marked unsafe and note down immediate actions required to repair or replace them.
  3. Engage your team in the process. Share the template with frontline staff or team members responsible for inspections. Guide them on what to look for, such as tamper seals, pressure gauge readings, and visibility of safety signs. Use the observations and comments section to document team feedback.
  4. Track compliance and training needs. Use the checklist to confirm whether site personnel have been trained in using extinguishers and whether the required equipment is in place. Missing extinguishers or training gaps can be highlighted and prioritized for action.
  5. Follow up and update regularly. After completing the inspection, assign tasks to address flagged issues and update the fire safety logbook. Regular updates help keep your records accurate and your premises compliant with safety standards.

Observations and Comments
Has a fire risk assessment been carried out and documented in the last 12 months?
A fire risk assessment is a legal requirement for virtually all non-domestic premises, and for certain multiple-occupancy dwellings and parts of such dwellings. Guidance is given in PAS 79.
Is the minimum quantities of class A extinguishers achieved?
Class A materials are generally present in all premises and occupancies. The minimum quantity of extinguishers with an A rating should be calculated as follows: a) for any storey with a floor area less than or equal to 400 m2, there should be: 1) at least two (2) extinguishers with a class A rating; having 2) a combined minimum total fire rating of.
Are any additional extinguishers required to ensure that the level of cover at the premises is at least sufficient and, where applicable, in accordance with BS 5306-8.
Have site personnel been trained in the use of extinguishers?
The competent person should bring to the attention of the responsible person the legal requirement for training. Every opportunity should be taken to instruct personnel in the use of extinguishers, and to demonstrate their performance. Extinguishers for different fire classifications will have different training requirements. NOTE Attention is drawn to legal obligations concerning training for the use of fire extinguishers.
Are powder fire extinguishers present within this premise?
The discharge of a powder extinguisher within buildings can cause a sudden reduction of visibility and can also impair breathing, which could temporarily jeopardise escape, rescue or other emergency action. For this reason, powder extinguishers should generally not be specified for use indoors, unless mitigated by a health and safety risk assessment.
Are the extinguishers available for immediate use at all times?
This is achieved by siting extinguishers in conspicuous positions on brackets, on floor stands or within cabinets.
Is the position and type of a fire extinguisher indicated on a sign so that, if the extinguisher is removed, this can be identified during a safety inspection, and a replacement ordered.
Attention is drawn to Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 [6] and the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1996 [7] in respect of indicating the location of fire-fighting equipment.
Are extinguishers mounted correctly?
Small extinguishers with a mass up to and including 4 kg should be mounted so as to position the handle approximately 1.5 m from the floor. The carrying handle of larger, heavier extinguishers should be approximately 1 m from the floor (but see Note). WARNING. Care should be taken to ensure that extinguishers do not themselves cause injuries by being dislodged and falling onto limbs or bodies. NOTE Extinguishers may also be positioned on fire-stands, fire-points or in cabinets, in which case these height recommendations need not be followed.
Is the provision of replacement extinguishers achieved?
The responsible person should ensure that the provision of extinguishers on site does not fall below the minimum recommended by this part of BS 5306 and the fire risk assessment. Discharged extinguishers should therefore be recharged or replaced after use. This may be achieved by making sufficient spare extinguishers available.
Engineers Comments
Fire Safety Log Book
Is there a fire safety log book available?
A fire safety logbook and maintenance record should remain on the premises at all times. The register will assist in proving compliance with your legal responsibilities in relation to fire safety and should be completed following the inspection, test and maintenance of any of the items required by the legislation. The logbook should be available for inspection by any Fire Officer who inspects your premises under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 or by any service engineer as required.

Frequently asked questions

How do I inspect fire fighting equipment?

Inspecting fire fighting equipment starts with a thorough visual check. Look for physical damage, corrosion, or missing parts like safety pins or seals. Confirm that pressure gauges are in the green zone and that hoses are free of cracks. Verify all items are accessible, correctly mounted, and labeled with clear instructions or signage for use.

What’s the difference between servicing and inspecting fire extinguishers?

Inspection is a quick visual check to confirm that extinguishers are present, accessible, and appear functional. Servicing, on the other hand, involves more in-depth maintenance, such as testing pressure, replacing parts, and refilling or recharging as needed. While inspections can be done more frequently, servicing typically follows annual schedules or regulatory requirements.

How can I tell if a fire extinguisher is out of date or unsafe to use?

Check the manufacturing date on the extinguisher and compare it to its expected lifespan, usually 5-15 years depending on the type. Warning signs include a damaged cylinder, a missing tamper seal, a low-pressure gauge reading, or incomplete inspection records.
